2.      The Washington Animal Rescue League opened the first shelter in the District in 1914. Famous first ladies including Jackie Kennedy and Mamie Eisenhower took and interest in their work. In 2006 they opened a revolutionary shelter and medical space designed from the animal’s point of view. Check it out at www.warl.org

 

3.      “Baghdad Pups” reunites returning troops with animals they befriended during the war is just one of the missions of SPCA International. www.spca.com  

 

4.      Washington, D.C., is home to the Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest animal welfare organization with over 10 million members. Their web site offers information about all facets of animal welfare from advice about pets to disaster relief and legal advocacy.  www.hsus.org 

 

5.      The Washington Humane Society is the only Congressionally-chartered animal welfare organization in the country. WHS runs two animal shelters, a spay/neuter facility and a training center. Pack (People and Animal Cardio Klub) volunteers take dogs for a jog around city parks.  www.washhumane.org
